Othello by American Shakespeare Center
October 10 - October 17
I AM NOT WHAT I AM.
“POWERFUL…unflinching…spectacularly effective.” — THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
“Jessika D. Williams is a marvel to behold,” — DC Metro Theater Arts
If truth has lost its meaning, how long can love survive? Evil is everywhere in Shakespeare’s great tragedy of racism and jealousy, as the love of Othello and Desdemona is destroyed by envy and fact is twisted by innuendo. You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat as the deadly machinations unfold.
ASC favorite Jessika Williams (Doctor Who) takes on the title role with veteran actor-manager John Harrell as the scheming Iago.
Contains adult themes.

Directed by celebrated ASC Artistic Director Ethan McSweeny, this stunningly relevant production of Shakespeare’s tragedy of racism and jealousy promises to bring audiences to the edge of their seats. Acclaimed actress Jessika D. Williams, who has won a cult following from her appearance on the popular television series Doctor Who, appears in the title role of Othello. Opposite Williams is veteran actor-manager for text John Harrell as the malevolent Iago. It’s a struggle between good and evil when these two titanic talents square off.
ASC is among the first not-for-profit companies in North America to produce live theatre for in-person audiences since the pandemic shut the performing arts industry down in March. As part of its 2020 SafeStart Season the company offers audiences three ways to enjoy performances this summer: online via BlkFrs LIVE; appropriately socially distanced at the Blackfriars Playhouse, the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor stage; and outdoors on the lawn of the Blackburn Inn and Conference Center.
You can watch the performance from a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone device. The link will be to the American Shakespeare Center’s Vimeo video of the show, which you will be able to view on any internet browser. If you would like to download the free Vimeo app to your tablet or smartphone you certainly can, but it is not required. If you would like to watch via a smart TV, we recommend following Vimeo’s directions for your model here.
