He has won the Larry Levis Reading Prize\, the James Boatwright Prize and the Miller Williams Prize. His poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies\, and he has taught at several universities including\, most recently\, in the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University. DESCRIPTION:The McCreight Lecture\n \nAs part of its year-long celebration of fifty years serving West Virginians through the humanities\, the WV Humanities Council is proud to announce novelist and poet Percival Everett as this year’s McCreight speaker. \nDoors open at 7:00 PM\nThe lecture begins at 7:30 PM \nThe Speaker\nPercival Everett is the author of more than thirty books of fiction and poetry. He is a Pulitzer Prize finalist—among many other awards—and his novel Erasure was recently adapted into the Oscar-winning film American Fiction. His latest novel\, James\, is a reimagining of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Huck’s enslaved friend Jim. Released in March 2024\, James became an instant New York Times Bestseller. She believed that the humanities were at the heart of a democratic society\, a necessary source of wisdom and vision. \nPresented each October\, the McCreight Lecture affords West Virginians the opportunity to hear nationally respected scholars and public intellectuals on a variety of humanities topics. DESCRIPTION:Art-for-FALL Teen Juried Art Exhibition\n \nArt-for-FALL is a juried art exhibition open to 7th-12th grades. \nStop by The Clay Center to see this FestivFALL exhibition highlighting the work of local aspiring artists. The show will be up at the ticketing lobby of The Clay Center from October 11-20 with an Awards Ceremony at Haddad Riverfront Park on Oct. 20 at 3:30pm. \nFREE Event \nThe purpose of the exhibition is to provide a forum for teen student artists to display their work and to recognize excellence. The exhibition will be held in The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences\, October 11-20\, and will be free and open to the public along with the Awards Ceremony at The Clay Center on October 20 at 3:30pm. A slide show of accepted works will be displayed on the FestivALL Charleston Neighborhood Arts Initiative Facebook page. \nSUBMISSION DEADLINE: Oct. 1 (more details coming soon) \nSee full details\, deadlines and guidelines HERE. \nELIGIBILITY:\nJurying for Art-for-FALL is open to all students in 7th through 12th grades in Boone\, Braxton\, Cabell\, Clay\, Fayette\, Greenbrier\, Jackson\, Kanawha\, Lincoln\, Nicholas\, Putnam\, Raleigh and Roane counties. Each student may submit one entry\, though students may also submit as part of a group piece in addition to the one individual submission. Work needs to have been completed after August 1\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:Rise and Thrive: A Celebration of Resilience for Justice-Impacted Youth\nOct. 8 -24Location: The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation\, 178 Summers St.Viewers will enjoy this student exhibit through the windows from the sidewalk\n  \nWVSDT‘s art exhibit\, taking place in the windows of The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation\, is being held in conjunction with Youth Justice Action Month (YJAM).  \nYJAM is an annual campaign where advocates unite to organize digital and in-person events to raise awareness and inspire action for young people impacted by the justice system.  \nThe exhibit will feature student artwork centered around the themes of resilience and personal strength and will be on display in the windows of The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation from Oct. 8-24.
