Neighborhood Arts Initiative

FestivALL Charleston would like to introduce to you the Neighborhood Arts Initiative, a program that aims to connect our community’s children and youth with opportunities in the arts.

The goals of the Neighborhood Arts Initiative include:

  • Education: Connecting students with arts instruction and creation opportunities
  • Engagement: Connecting students with opportunities to attend exhibitions, performances, and artists workshops
  • Exhibition: Connecting students with opportunities to showcase their own art and performance

We accomplish these goals through the programs listed below. We want to be flexible and work with your program in a way that makes sense for you. Your students can participate in all or some of the opportunities. Contact FestivALL today to set a plan that works for you!

Ticket Town
Ticket Town is a program that connects children and youth with local performing art experiences. Since October 2017, hundreds of students have attended dozens of performances by groups like WV Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Ballet, Charleston Light Opera Guild, and more. In addition to tickets to performances, mini-grants are also available to help support staff time, travels costs, and other related activities. (See separate form for grant application available upon request.) The program also offers occasional workshops with performing artists and groups.

Children’s Art Fair and Arts Instruction
The Children’s Art Fair is a perfect combination for two days of family fun. Adjacent to the Capitol Street Art Fair where dozens of professional artists sell their works, the Children’s Art Fair & Sale offers young artists the chance to interact with each other and the public. Invited artists and groups offer free make-and-take art activities, kid-friendly performances take the stage all day long, and there is an opportunity for children to participate in art instruction provided by FestivALL leading up to the fair sell their works. All are welcome to the Fairs! Art instruction is organized separately through FestivALL, so please contact the Neighborhood Arts Coordinator if you are interested in this opportunity!

Art-for-ALL/Teen Art Search
Art-for-ALL is a kid’s juried art exhibition that provides a forum for student artists to display their work and to recognize excellence.  The exhibition is held in the lobby of the Clay Center during the days of FestivALL and is free and open to the public. Jurying for Art-for-ALL is open to all children in grades pre-K through 6th grade.  The Teen and College Art Search: FestivALL’s Quest for Emerging Artists is an annual event produced by Charleston Town Center, which searches for the most visually artistic teens & college students, & showcases a selection of art work at the Town Center Mall during FestivALL in June.  This art show is open to artists in middle school, high school & college students, ages 13-23. Entries for both events are open to students who reside or attend school in Boone, Braxton, Cabell, Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Nicholas, Putnam, Raleigh and Roane counties. Applications can be completed online.

Art Parade
The FestivALL Art Parade is a vibrant celebration of the creativity and spirit of FestivALL. All groups are welcome to join as visual artists, theatrical groups, dancers, street performers, art cars, music makers and local organizations parade down Capitol Street from Kanawha Boulevard to the post-parade party at Capitol Market.

We are very excited to partner with your organization on these opportunities! Please contact us today so that we can begin setting a plan that works best for you and the community you serve!
