Bringing a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math speakers to WV’s capitol city, the Chancellor’s STEM Speaker Series presents Carl Zimmer, science journalist, for his talk “The Age of Viruses and Viral Disinformation: Making Sense of the Pandemic”.
Zimmer writes for the New York Times, National Geographic, and NPR, as well as many popular books.
Talk: 6-7pm
Book signing: 7-7:45pm
Zimmer is a familiar voice on radio programs such as Radiolab and professor adjunct at Yale University. He is, to his knowledge, the only writer after whom both a species of tapeworm and an asteroid have been named.
The STEM Speaker Series began in 2014 with a goal of communicating science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) research to all West Virginians.

This year’s FREE concert welcomes ALL to enjoy the diverse sounds of FestivALL in the heart of the city. Featured acts include 4Chill, Juice Newsom & The Groove and Erin & The Wildfire! Food trucks will be on-site.
Erin & The Wildfirestarted as four college kids in Charlottesville, Virginia making music just for fun, but has grown into a flourishing, decade-long musical relationship among four best friends. E&TW, who now call Virginia’s capital city of Richmond home, have evolved their sound over the past ten years to where it currently stands firmly in the soul and indie-pop genres, drawing influences from a wide range of artists including Emily King, D’Angelo, YEBBA, Vulfpeck, and Donny Hathaway.
The band blends the expressive, powerhouse vocals of frontwoman, Erin Lunsford, with the pop, funk, and indie sensibilities of bandmates Ryan Lipps (guitar), Nick Quillen (drums), and Matt Wood (bass). In addition to the core four, E&TW has recently found a kindred musical soul in keyboardist Stephen Roach, who has played with the band since 2019.
Erin & The Wildfire’s first live show back, after a pandemic-induced hiatus in 2020, was an exciting sold-out event at Richmond, Virginia’s Friday Cheers in 2021. The band also made their debut on NPR’s Mountain Stage in 2021 alongside Amy Helm, Chris Pierce, and Christian Lopez, airing to 200+ stations nationwide. E&TW has provided direct support for national tours including Sammy Rae & The Friends’ 2022 Follow Me Like the Moon Tour, Maggie Rose’s Summer 2022 Tour, and The Dip’s Fall 2019 Tour. They have shared the stage with other dynamic acts including Oh He Dead, Marcus King Band, Natalie Prass, Jill Scott, Butcher Brown, Mighty Joshua, The Village People, and Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds.

The one-person play, You Might As Well Live, explores the life, loves, and legacy of literary icon and sharp-tongued member of the Algonquin Round Table – Dorothy Rothschild Parker.
More details coming soon!
On the eve of her death, and determined to be remembered as more than the creator of such quips as “The overseas crossing was so rough, the only thing I could keep on my stomach was the first mate”, Dorothy takes a pilgrimage through her own past talking to the ghost of her old friend Robert Benchley about the bastardization of literalture in the 1960’s and her hatred of Hemingway. In a journey packed with quick wit and a biting tongie, she sets out to make her mark in the literary scene of 1930’s New York City. From writing copy at Vogue Magazine to theatrical reviews at Vanity Fair, to scripting classic films in Hollywood (such as A Star is Born), You Might As Well Live explores Parker as she climbs the ladder of success, fighting for recognition as a female author in a male dominated world. She writes to escape her life only to discover that’s what her writing becomes.
