    Contemporary Youth Arts Company Presents: “Why We Stayed”

    “Why We Stayed: The Forgotten Victims of Domestic Violence Speak”

    “Why We Stayed” is a theatrical production by the Contemporary Youth Arts Company (CYAC) that explores the complex reasons people remain in abusive relationships, focusing on the often-ignored struggles of “forgotten victims” of domestic violence. The play portrays the daily realities of survival for diverse characters—from mothers and police officers to convicts and neighbors—highlighting the societal barriers, personal struggles, and emotional entrapments that prevent people from leaving abusive situations. The production serves as a fundraising event for the YWCA’s Resolve Family Abuse Program, aiming to give voice to survivors and foster understanding of these difficult issues.

    NOTE: the trail is a wide gravel way approximately one-half mile long and has a moderately steep incline.

    The Alban Arts Center proudly presents Steel Magnolias.
    “Steel Magnolias” is a heartfelt and humorous play written by Robert Harling. Set in a small Louisiana town, the play centers around a close-knit group of Southern women who gather regularly at a local beauty salon run by the no-nonsense Truvy Jones. The story unfolds over a span of about three years, showcasing the daily lives, struggles, and triumphs of these strong, resilient women.

    The play explores themes of friendship, family, and the complexities of life through a series of poignant and often humorous scenes. The title itself reflects the essence of the characters: “Steel” symbolizes their strength and resilience, while “Magnolias” represents their delicate and nurturing nature.
    Through its blend of humor and emotional depth, “Steel Magnolias” highlights the power of female friendship and the enduring support these women provide each other through life’s ups and downs. The play has been celebrated for its authentic portrayal of Southern life and its ability to resonate with audiences through its relatable characters and heartfelt storytelling.

  • CANCELED: The Witches of Wolfhaven & Warlock Operetta

    Tomorrow’s Witches of Wolfhaven & Warlock Operetta is canceled due to illness.

    The two operas (Witches of Wolfhaven and Warlock Concert) take place in a mystical world of witches and warlocks. While Gertrude belongs to the benevolent Wolfhaven coven, Gustav is a member of the clan led by the evil witch Kannika. The two young people meet and fall in love. Will Gertrude save Gustav from his evil ways, or will their differences tear them apart?

    “Gustav and Gertrude” (Two original operas by locals Mark Hornbaker and Caroline Chamness) performed by the Academy Singers and members of the WV State Philharmonic under Scott Woodard with special guest singers Betsy Baer and Ashley Dannewitz.

    This is a FREE performance at the Davis Fine Arts Center Theater at West Virginia State University.

  • The Rustic Mechanicals presents Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”

    West Virginia’s only professional Shakespeare troupe, The Rustic Mechanicals, performs the classic Hamlet at the Capital High School Theater.

    Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students.
